Dr. Oliver Musl has transitioned from a year-long postdoctoral fellowship at BPI to the role of Assistant Professor at the Institute of Chemistry of Renewable Resources, Department of Chemistry, BOKU University in Austria.
During his time at BPI, Oliver played a pivotal role in establishing connections with the pulping industry, acquiring lignins and liquors, and fractionating and purifying lignins, thus creating a valuable lignin library. His work extended to lignin applications, including lignin (nano)particles and lignin-derived carbon materials. Together, the team laid the foundation for future lignin projects, fostering international collaborations and connections. He expresses profound gratitude for the opportunity provided by Dr. Orlando Rojas and the Biobased Colloids & Materials (BiCMat) group.
Oliver extends his appreciation to other collaborative group members and recognizes the supportive networks within BPI, including groups led by Dr. Johan Foster, Dr. Emily Cranston, Dr. Scott Renneckar, and Dr. Feng Jiang. He also acknowledges Dr. Tao Zou and Dr. Scott Renneckar for generously sharing their infrastructure and knowledge.
With a year of personal and scientific growth at UBC, Oliver eagerly embarks on the next chapter of his career as an Assistant Professor at BOKU University in Vienna. His research will continue to focus on lignin chemistry, analytics, and applications.
Reflecting on his journey, Oliver advises aspiring students to choose teams that provide both enjoyment and support, especially during challenging times. He underscores that UBC offers an excellent environment for young postdocs to test their capabilities, develop leadership skills, and expand their scientific networks. Vancouver holds a special place in his heart, and he eagerly anticipates future encounters with colleagues and friends.
Congratulations to Professor Oliver!
