BPI hosted an exclusive lab tour for a group of TAPPI Nano 2023 guests. The event, held on June 12th, provided a unique opportunity for participants to explore BPI's state-of-the-art research facilities. The group consisted of professionals with diverse backgrounds, including start-up CEOs, professors, and students representing 25 organizations from 13 countries. Notably, Larry Montague, the CEO of TAPPI, graced the event with his presence.
The tour began with a warm welcome and brief overview of BPI's research activities by Dr. Orlando Rojas. Subsequently, the guests were guided through a series of labs and buildings, including Pulp & Paper Centre, Clean Energy Research Centre, Centre for Advanced Wood Processing, and Forest Science Centre. This comprehensive itinerary allowed attendees to witness firsthand the cutting-edge research being conducted at BPI, providing them with valuable insights into the institute's innovative endeavors.
After the intensive lab tour program, participants had the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely stroll across the picturesque UBC campus, taking in its architectural landmarks. A delightful lunch buffet awaited them at the AMS Nest, a popular spot located at the heart of UBC. The tour culminated with a memorable group photo shoot at the scenic Rose Garden, capturing the spirit of the event.
Dr. Hidayah Ariffin, a Professor from Universiti Putra Malaysia, expressed her enthusiasm for the tour, stating, "As a university professor, I believe I made the right choice in visiting BPI. The tour was truly enlightening, and I am grateful for the effort put in by Orlando and his team to ensure our visit was well-prepared. The opportunity to engage with exhibitors and researchers in smaller groups allowed for meaningful interactions. The remarkable quality of research, the dedication of researchers and students, and the well-equipped facilities were all inspiring. Additionally, I had the chance to connect with researchers from various universities and companies. It was an awesome experience!"
Julia Prescheux-Sergienko, a PhD Student at Grenoble INP, said "Having known the BioProducts Institute's name on an international level, I had high hopes, and I was not disappointed! The laboratories possessed capabilities for a wide range of different techniques and processes that enable dealing with biomass at various scales and levels, including woodwork, paper-making, advanced cellulose materials, carbon capture, and much more. The entire tour was very exhilarating, and the best part of it was the passion of the researchers who presented their work. It was contagious!"
Samuel Hahn, an MSc student at BPI who served as one of the tour guides, shared his perspective, saying, "Even after spending six years at UBC, leading these tours gave me a fresh perspective on the campus, reigniting my love for it. I felt proud to represent the amazing group of researchers I have the privilege of working with."
Dr. Johan Foster, Chair of TAPPI Nano 2023 Organizing Committee, expressed his gratitude to the researchers and staff who contributed to the success of the tour. He emphasized the significance of the event in showcasing the collaborative efforts and world-class research conducted at BPI. Moreover, it served as a valuable platform to establish connections with guests for potential future collaborations. The tour not only demonstrated BPI's commitment to advancing bio-based innovations but also fostered international cooperation, igniting inspiration for future breakthroughs in the field.
