We would like to extend a warm welcome to Dr. Tianxi Yang for joining BPI!
Dr. Tianxi Yang is an Assistant Professor of Food Science at the UBC Faculty of Land and Food Systems. Dr. Yang received her PhD at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Food Science, specializing in Analytical Chemistry. She conducted her postdoctoral research at BASF’s North American Center for Research on Advanced Materials. Prior to joining UBC,
she was a Research Chemist at Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), and Research Fellow at the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Dr. Yang’s work lies at the intersection of food science, analytical science, and nanomaterial-polymer science to develop novel analytical tools and advanced materials with the goal of improving the safety, sustainability, and resiliency of agri-food systems. Her research group is currently focused on three major themes: (1) Develop novel Point-of-Care tools for food safety monitoring, (2) Design innovative nano-enabled materials for sustainable farming and precision agriculture, and (3) Create sustainable and multifunctional packaging materials to improve food safety and quality.
As we eagerly anticipate collaborating with Dr. Yang, we also took the opportunity to learn more about her through some personal trivia, offering a peek into her life outside the lab:
- I grew up…in Heze City, the “peony capital of China,” renowned for its peony gardens that
bloom vibrantly every spring. - When I was a kid… I wanted to be an artist and designer.
- At school… I like studying both arts and sciences.
- I enjoy… practicing Chinese calligraphy, especially when I was a kid.
- The best meal… traditional foods from various cultures.
- My favorite beverage… blooming tea with decent flavors.
- Friends know me… a friendly person with a curious mind
- I’m reading… scientific news every day that keeps me connected to the evolving landscape of
research and innovation - Important words… seize the day to remind me to enjoy every moment with enthusiasm

- The best gift I ever received… my son who enriched my world with love, responsibility and
joy. - My favorite music… relaxing piano music that can calm the mind.
- My hero... my mom, who provided a significant source of inspiration, strength, and guidance
throughout my life - On my days off… I like to spend time with my family and explore nature nearby.
- If I wasn’t working at UBC… I will be continuing to do research in the United States
