Call for joint grant application - Bioeconomy in the North

March 21, 2022

BPI has been receiving expressions of interest related to the Bioeconomy in the North (BiN) competition from potential partners in Europe that are looking for a partner at UBC or other institutes in Canada.  The minimum consortium requirement is three partners from three different countries and at least one industry partner from one of the member countries.

One thing to remember is that there is no new funding from the Canadian side. You will need to have funding from an existing or already secured funding source to participate. This is an opportunity for Canadian partners to be part of a BIN application with colleagues from other countries and to leverage the funding/project that the Canadian partner has to strengthen their application (because Canada has already funded their researcher’s component).  We set this up in hopes of fostering those relationships and benefiting via knowledge sharing. From Canada’s perspective this can be viewed as a seeding program for next year’s program where they are hoping to have matching funding from the Canadian agencies.

Expressions of interest have been received from the below researchers and industry partners (not in any specific order).

  1. Dr. Andreas Michanickl, Director of Wood-based Bioeconomy Group, Rosenheim Technical University of Applied Sciences (THRO), Germany
  2. Lars Sandberg, CEO of Blue Ocean Closures (a Swedish company that produces fully biobased, ocean biodegradable, and recyclable fibre-based screw cap solutions)
  3. Dr. Alamin Abdulgadir, RISE-MoRe Research Örnsköldsvik AB, Sweden - Development of cellulose-based fiber composite material for filter application and fiber network simulation
  4. Dr. Monika Bosilj, Head of Group Sustainable Catalytic Materials, Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE - Developing new biomass-based carbons (as well nitrogen-doped carbons) using hydrothermal carbonisation (HTC) approach
  5. Dr. Xavier Crispin, Organic Electronics Lab, Linkoping University, Sweden - Lignin derivatives composited with electronic polymers for large scale charge storage applications
