Abstract
Cascade utilization of a net growing forest is part of the solution for a sustainable planet. Cascade utilization of wood and biomass fractionation will be explored. Pulping is a key process in the forest value chain as it can utilize wood chip residues from sawmills while at the same time producing a range of byproducts which can be energy-related (e.g., renewable electricity and district heating) but equally chemical such as turpentine, methanol, lignin and tall oil which is now converted to jet fuel. Byproducts will be discussed in terms of upgrading to chemicals, fuels, and higher value materials. It is beneficial for the climate to convert sawdust and bark to jet fuel (biojet), replacing fossil fuels, as planned by the SCA Biorefinery Östrand.
About the Speaker
Dr. Christian Kugge R&D Specialist at SCA Forest Products, focuses on development and use of material within forest industry. His work involves exploring the chemistry of lignocellulosic materials to improve processes related to pulp industry and developing biobased products including new sustainable materials such as growing media for (pine, contorta, spruce) seedlings. His research emphasizes the use of renewable resources and kraft pulp byproducts including biogenic CO2 to create environmentally friendly chemicals, fuels and materials which contribute to sustainability and innovation within the forest sector. After doctoral studies at KTH, postdoc at ANU and researcher at CSIRO he joined SCA in 2010.
He has been part of authoring 18 articles and is the main inventor of 8 patents.
