Xiaonan works on developing innovative and rapid sensing technologies, instrumentation systems, and other detection methods for ensuring food safety and preventing food bioterrorism. His five directional research focus is:
- Developing sensor and nano-based single-molecule biophotonics to rapidly detect chemical and microbiological hazards in food systems.
- Campylobacter-associated food safety.
- Food microbiology
- Characterization of emerging foodborne viruses, nanoscopic optical imaging for contagious virus tracking and virus-host cell interaction investigation.
- Detection of food fraud and adulteration.
