HONGBIN LI AWARDED $1.65M FOR NSERC CREATE TRAINING PROGRAM
Congratulations to BPI's Dr. Hongbin Li for being awarded $1.65 million for the NSERC CREATE Training Program in 3D Printing Technology and Materials (3DPTM). NSERC is funding 13 initiatives through its Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) program.

BPI RESEARCHERS TRANSFORM LOW-VALUE WOOD INTO LIGHTWEIGHT AND STRONG STRUCTURAL MATERIAL
BPI researchers have been able to transform low-value wood into "healed wood" through the processes of delignification, combined with partial dissolution and regeneration, to expose cellulose fibrils originally present in the cell walls.

DR. ORLANDO ROJAS INTERVIEWED BY NEW SCIENTIST
BPI's Dr. Orlando Rojas was interviewed about how waste wood can be recycled to produce material stronger than steel. This material is referred to as "healed wood" and it is more resistant to breaking than stainless steel or titanium alloys.

ECO-FRIENDLY SINGLE-USE PLASTICS ALTERNATIVE CREATED BY BPI RESEARCHERS
An alternative to single-use plastics was created by BioProducts Institute researchers using chitin. Drinking straws can be fabricated from chitin via an adhesive-free process. Chitin straws outperform most straws in hydrostability and mechanical properties.

BPI RESEARCHERS DEVELOP NEW CLASS OF SOFT MATERIALS
A new class of soft materials was created by BioProducts Institute researchers. Rojas Research Group’s Dr. Milad Kamkar developed a technique called “liquid streaming”. This technique uses 3D printers to deposit a mixture of water and graphene oxide in oil.
